frequently asked questions

What Should I Wear and Bring?

Dress in comfortable gym shorts and a t-shirt. We don’t wear shoes on the mats, so it doesn’t matter what footwear you show up in. I also recommend bringing a water bottle and a small towel to wipe your face with since you will likely sweat. Socks are optional. Most people do not wear socks on the mats because they are very slippery.

What Should I Expect from Training?

If you’re a beginner, we’ll start from the ground up. We’ll teach you the rules of Jiu Jitsu, fundamental positions, conceptual stuff you’ll use throughout your entire journey. If you have experience, we’ll focus on specific areas you need help with like submissions, guard passing, defending and escaping, or competition prep.

Do I Have to Roll (Spar)?

It’s up to you, but rolling is the foundation of jiu jitsu. That said, we’ll keep it light, fun, and safe. For harder rounds, I’ll show you where to go for open mat or how to sign up for competitions.

Do I Have to Compete?

Absolutely not. Competition isn’t for everyone. Some people never compete. However, if you aspire to compete, we’ll help you prepare. If not, that’s totally fine too!

What is "American" Jiu Jitsu

American Jiu Jitsu (AJJ) offers a modern approach to submission grappling that emphasizes each person’s natural gifts (speed, strength, weight, flexibility, athleticism, etc.) to attack dominant positions, to pin and control opponents, and to work toward submission under resistance and pressure.

Academy Improvements

As we grow, we’re continuously improving. We do that by setting aside a portion of all private lesson and merch sales to go toward academy upgrades. Currently, we’re raising money for a large crash pad to practice takedowns like the Uchimata, O-Goshi, Osoto Gari, Sumi Gaeshi, Tomoe Nage, and Single and Double-Legs. We’ve already raised enough to significanly upgrade our training space several times, so thank you for your support!
