BEGINNER JIU JITSU LESSONS IN CARL JUNCTION, MO

Private lessons are a great way to start, learn, and grow at the art of Jiu Jitsu.

There’s no experience required, and you don’t have to be in shape.

Private Jiu Jitsu Lessons

For Kids Ages 6+: Jiu Jitsu offers discipline, respect, encouragement, confidence, and fun. Jiu Jitsu teaches skills your kid(s) will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Jiu Jitsu is easily one of the best skills a child can learn and I would love to be the first instructor to introduce them to it. My daughter was 6 when she started. She’s since earned multiple promotions, and won multiple gold medals in jiu jitsu competitions.

For Adults: They say walking into a combat sports gym is the hardest part of getting started. You don’t know anyone and you don’t know what to expect. You can bridge that gap with private lessons to bring you up-to-speed. Even if you already train, private lessons can help you improve much faster than you will by showing up to non-personalized gym lessons each week.

I have personally coached multiple people (children and adults) from their first day on the mats through their first competition gold medal wins.

About Your Instructor

Hi, I’m Lex DeVille, a Combat Sports Psychology PhD student, Military Veteran, and Competition Blue Belt. I’ve been an Assistant Coach for kids classes for Springfield Fight Club since May of 2025. As an active competitor, I’ve competed in nearly 35 tournaments across 7 states over the last 2 years, and in close to 150 live matches. I also work as Staff for some of the tournament organizations.

I’ve coached multiple beginners from their first day on the mats through their first gold medal wins and others who had no competition aspirations at all. In 2026, I relocated to Carl Junction, MO where I started teaching Private Lessons out of my home for those in the community who want to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Will We Train?

We’re in Carl Junction, MO and we’ll share the address once you book a free trial lesson. We can also come to you if you prefer to train at home, so long as you have enough space for at least one 5’x10′ mat that we can drill and work on.

What Should I Wear and Bring?

Dress in comfortable gym shorts and a t-shirt. We don’t wear shoes on the mats, so it doesn’t matter what footwear you show up in. I also recommend bringing a water bottle and a small towel to wipe your face with since you will likely sweat.

What Should I Expect from Training?

What you learn will be based around your individual goals. If you’re a beginner, we’ll start from the ground up. I’ll teach you the rules of jiu jitsu, fundamental positions, conceptual stuff that you’ll use throughout your entire jiu jitsu journey. If you have some experience, we can focus on areas you need help with such as submission chaining, guard passing, defending and escaping attacks, or even competition prep.

Do I Have to Roll (Spar)?

That’s totally up to you, but rolling is the foundation of jiu jitsu. Good AJJ is meant to be pressure tested. That said, I don’t currently have the space for hard rolls, so any rolling we do will likely start from the ground and will be very light and flow style or positional.

Do You Offer Gi Training At All?

Yes, I can teach you Gi Jiu Jitsu if you want. Just know that it’s not my personal focus. There’s a great Gi-focused BJJ gym in Webb City that I would refer you to if you want to play more Gi style. Gi is practically all they do, and they have multiple black belt instructors teaching it. While I can teach you beginner-level Gi, you will be much better served by attending their training in the long run.

What If I Am Older or Out of Shape?

The cool thing is, jiu jitsu doesn’t really have an age limit or a fitness requirement. Yes, you should be medically cleared by your doctor, but beyond that, I can teach you jiu jitsu at a level and pace that matches your individual needs. If you are older, I will go lighter and more slowly. If you are out-of-shape, I will consider your current fitness while helping you improve your physique. In the past, I have worked with kids as young as 5 and adults up to their mid 60’s and I’ve seen adults compete into their late 70’s. So even if you’re starting later in life, you can do this too.
